Wish you could have a new look in your shower without a ton of busy tile or grout to clean? How about the ability to customize the shower to the unique space you already have with niches, benches, colors, and textures? Perhaps you are looking to install a shower that allows you to stay in your home longer? We offer an option that gives you the stylish look you want with the added peace of mind that you are making a long-term investment to age in place. All these needs point to one solution: a custom-fit Onyx Collection shower system from Village Home Stores.
Custom Vanity Tops and Showers by Onyx Collection

Onyx Collection products are made-to-order in Belvue, Kansas, and shipped directly to our Warehouse in Geneseo, Illinois. Our team can measure and order all items needed for your shower installation and arrange for delivery for your own contractor or DIY project. Of course, we also offer complete Project Management Remodels at Village Home Stores, so we are able to handle the whole project for you from start to finish. While we are focusing on the shower products in this post, please know that the full range of colors can also be ordered in vanity tops.

Standard and custom sizes are available, and the bowl styles are amazing. You will be delighted at the price and performance of this product for a bathroom vanity top. Tops can be ordered in many thicknesses and edge styles and with or without an integrated backsplash. End/side splashes of matching material can be ordered if your top touches a wall or cabinet. If you want the look of polished stone counters with an undermounted bowl, a two-tone bowl option is available to give that effect in an easy-to-clean seamless top.
What is This Stuff?
It looks like stone but isn’t as cold, pricey, or heavy as stone… so what is this stuff? It is a manufactured material that is 63% Alumina (the same main ingredient as Corian if you recognize that name), and the remaining % is a special polyester resin. The Onyx resin has been developed over the last 30 years and does NOT contain any urea formaldehyde in it. The shine on the product comes from a gel coat on the top surface (like other cultured marble products). This is a tight-molecule gel coat that is very resistant to water penetration.

Since every shower is unique to each home, you have selections to make with our team. But do not stress; your bathroom expert at Village Home Stores will be there with you to guide each choice.
Choose Your Shower Base
Onyx shower bases can be ordered to fit standard openings or custom-made to fit your unique space. Your designer at Village will help you determine which of these categories your project requires. The base can be ordered with a low-profile, mid-height, or full-height curb to the base. The Onyx Collection also offers ramped curb shower bases in standard shower sizes.

If you have a unique shape or size, a custom shower base can be made to the measurements and shape of our designer’s request. This custom base option allows you to have an Onyx shower base even if you have a unique entry location, a clipped corner, a walk-in U-shaped layout, or a space with odd angles. In their words: “If you can draw it, we can make it;” so between their years of experience and our technically skilled designers, we can handle any shape of shower project.
Age-in-Place Investment: Low-Profile Shower Bases with Add-On Ramp
Age-in-place investments are always the wise choice. Many immediately think of these decisions as needed for when they are permanently in need of a wheelchair or other assistive devices. But consider if you were to need surgery that involved long-term recovery? An unexpected surgery or injury could happen in any season of your life. That is where the option of an easier shower entry and even an Add-On Ramp is perfect! Add-On Ramps turn any Onyx Low-Profile base into a Ramped base. Our team can install the ramp permanently temporarily or leave it loose to be used when needed. Onyx offers low-profile shower bases that can adapt to that need with an Add-On Ramp made of the matching Onyx color of your shower. Check out this option here on the Onyx website (and see a detailed drawing showing the installation). Even without the ramp, the low-profile base is very easy to access without taking a big step into and out of the shower (low-profile shown below without ramp).

Even if you do not plan on using it now, order your shower with a Low-Profile base and add a loose Add-On Ramp to be stored somewhere else in the home. Having the ramp on site means you have an added feature that can be a game-changing option for a house guest or yourself years down the road. If you decide to choose an Integrated Ramped Curb that is a seamless ramp for your base, consider your entry and shower door/curtain options. Shower bases with integrated ramped curbs are recommended to have shower curtains and a Roll-Over Vinyl Threshold installed that will fold over when you step on it or roll over with a wheelchair. If your shower design includes glass panels and a glass shower door, we recommend instead ordering this Low-Profile Shower Base with an installed Add-On Ramp so the glass and door can fit correctly and keep water in the shower.

Of course, we can also install grab bars and supports during the installation process. If you are considering an Onyx shower as an age-in-place investment, be sure to have some dialog with your Village designer to explore your options and plan for the safest setup possible.
Choose Your Color

There are a lot of options for the color of your materials, and Onyx has launched new designs that vibe well with current home trends. View the entire lineup of color options here on the Onyx site, or stop in our showroom to see samples. Because each project is unique, you have a license to be creative with the Village team and combine colors and textures for your installation.
Choose Your Onyx Texture
Love the look of a shower with full walls of subway tile… but have no interest in cleaning all that grout? Ask about the texture options we have available for your project! You can order your shower walls in 5 ways: Glossy Smooth, Subway Tile, Stone Tile, Wavy Tile, and Shiplap. See examples of those posted here.

The shower base can also have textured options for better slip-resistance, and they even have a new hex design that mimics a tiled shower base in an easy-to-clean surface. If you are after a truly tiled shower look, it is important to note that you can order just the Onyx shower base, and we can arrange for a custom tiled wall surround in your new bathroom. We often install this combination in both bath remodels and new home projects.
Add Custom Details and Options
Robe hooks, bench seats, niches, caddies, trim, and more can be ordered to add custom details and options to your bathroom. You have options for your drain style in an Onyx shower base, including a new trench/linear style drain. Onyx Collection material can also be ordered and used as tub surrounds and tub decks, as well as window sills and slab material for other surface needs. Crown molding and other trim pieces can also be added to your order. If you are not choosing to work with our Project Management remodel team and estimators, be sure that your contractor or installer connects with your salesperson at Village. That way, we can be sure to order any trim that may be needed to fit the shower on-site.

How Do I Clean My Onyx Collection Tops, Shower Walls, and Bases?
How do you clean your Onyx Collection surfaces? Onyx will clean up with very minimal effort. The main detail to note here is to use a non-abrasive cleaner. Any non-abrasive (no-grit) cleaner is safe to use on the surface, and silicone that ships with the product for installation. Weekly cleaning is more than enough to keep your countertop or shower looking great. Most household cleaners work well, and Onyx recommends the following: Eliminate Shower Tub + Tile, Clorox cleaners or wipes, Lysol, Clean Shower-Daily Shower Cleaner, Kaboom, Scrubbing Bubbles, and CLR Kitchen + Bath.

The simplest natural option for cleaning is white vinegar. White vinegar works best for our customers who battle hard water and soap film deposits. For extremely stubborn buildup, you can use white vinegar soaked on paper towels and apply it to the areas. After a half hour, wipe and scrub with a sponge or a non-abrasive nylon/plastic bristle scrub brush. Do NOT use Magic Eraser or similar products. Do NOT use Soft Scrub or Comet on your Onyx surfaces. To keep your Onyx looking great, you can even use a surface protectant to prevent water spots and deposits from forming (think Rain-X). Speaking of, did you know our shower glass can also be treated to help prevent water spots and buildup? The shower glass shown below is from a shower we installed in Hillsdale, IL, and comes with a water spot guard treatment. The homeowner was over-the-moon excited about the performance of this treated glass.
